Pool Ready For Summer

Is Your Pool Ready for Summer?

In Ask the Pool Experts by Platinum Pools

Let’s be clear.  We live in South Texas.  We don’t cover our pools for the winter.  We may have a water heater or use the spa during the winter season.  However, the warmer days will make your swimming pool even more inviting, especially if your pool is clean and well equipped.  Yes, even in wintertime, your oasis is not exempt from dirt and debris, so your pool can benefit from some attention before summer arrives.  We recommend these tips to prepare for summer fun in your backyard.

CHECK THE WORKING ORDER OF YOUR PUMP AND POOL EQUIPMENT

Before cleaning your pool, make sure your pump is in good working order.  Ensure the filter system works optimally and there are no cracks around.   If you are not sure how well it’s working, it’s worth hiring a pool technician to do an inspection and repair or replace damaged parts so you can use your pool safely and efficiently.

CLEAN YOUR POOL THOROUGHLY

Before the swimming season gets underway, take the time to clean your pool thoroughly.  You can use a robotic cleaner, but if you want a thorough clean, it’s best to brush and vacuum the surfaces by hand so you can reach those hard-to-reach areas that your robotic cleaner may be missing.

CLEAN OUT THE SKIMMER BOX AND FILTER

During the winter months, a lot of debris has probably accumulated in the skimmer basket.  A clogged filter prevents your pool water from flowing freely and causes your pump to wear out much quicker.

TEST YOUR CHEMICALS

You and your family will spend a lot of time by the oasis.  It is essential to balance the pool water chemicals at the beginning of the season and at least every two weeks.  If you are unsure of what levels are appropriate, contact your pool maintenance team or speak with a professional at your local pool store.

Before you dive in, you should perform the following tests

  • Chlorine
  • Alkalinity pH
  • Stabilizer content
  • Calcium hardness

YOUR SAFETY CHECK EQUIPMENT

If you have not used your pool over the winter, check your safety equipment, including all pool fences and gates.  Place any chemicals or equipment that could be a hazard to children in a safe place.

CLEAN THE YOUR SURROUNDING DECKING

Surfaces around the pool that have not been used or maintained during the winter can become infested with algae growth and stains.  Depending on the material used, there may be cracks, loose pavers, rot, or loose fasteners.  It is good to thoroughly clean your surfaces such as pavers and decking before summer and make any necessary repairs.

GIVE YOUR PATIO FURNITURE AN UPDATE

If you have left your patio furniture outside over the winter, it may need some maintenance to get it back in tip-top shape.  Maybe you need to brush them off and wash them down, or perhaps they need a more thorough cleaning if they have collected dirt and pollen on them.  If any outdoor tables, chairs, loungers, daybeds, and umbrellas have damage or are looking overly worn they could benefit from an update.

Inspect the components and tighten them as needed.  Look for mold on your upholstery and cushions and replace them to prevent spreading.  Consider replacing faded or stained fabrics to freshen up your space.
