Keeping Your Pool Fun and Worry‑Free

In Pool Safety by Platinum Pools

There is nothing quite like the first real heatwave of summer to make a backyard pool feel like the center of the universe. We all crave those long, sun‑drenched afternoons spent splashing, lounging, and relaxing.

However, a beautiful pool is only as good as it is safe. As pool owners, our primary goal isn’t just to maintain clear water; it’s to maintain a secure environment for our families and guests. To help you enjoy the season with total peace of mind, we’ve put together this essential safety checklist.

The Golden Rule: Active Supervision

When the music is playing and the grill is hot, it’s easy to get distracted. Active supervision means more than just being in the vicinity; it means having a designated Water Watcher.

The Water Watcher Card:
At parties, designate one adult to wear a lanyard or hold a specific item. Their only job is to watch the water; no phones, no drinks, no chatting. Rotate every 15–20 minutes to keep eyes fresh.

Touch Supervision:
For toddlers and non‑swimmers, an adult should always be within arm’s reach.

Hard Barriers & Hardware Checks

Your pool’s safety equipment works hard in the Houston humidity. Now is the time to perform a perimeter check.

The 5‑Minute Safety Drill:

  • Gate Latches: Does your gate self‑close and self‑latch every single time? Give it a push to be sure.
  • Fence Integrity: Check for loose slats or gaps that a small child or pet could squeeze through.
  • Alarms: If you use door or window alarms leading to the pool area, test the batteries today.

Chemical Balance vs. the Houston Heat

Safety isn’t just about preventing slips and falls; it’s about the water itself. High temperatures and lots of swimmers can strip your chlorine levels in hours, leading to bacteria growth or cloudy water that obscures the bottom of the pool.

  • Test Regularly: During June and July, test your water at least twice a week.
  • Shocking the Pool: After a big pool party, shock the water in the evening to kill contaminants and restore clarity for the next day.
  • The “View” Test: Ensure you can clearly see the main drain at the deepest part of the pool. If it’s blurry, the chemical balance is off.

Establish Family “Pool Laws”

Consistency is key for kids. Set clear rules and stick to them:

  • No running on the wet deck (slippery travertine or concrete is a hazard).
  • No diving in shallow areas.
  • Swim buddies are mandatory—even for strong swimmers.
  • Toys must be removed from the pool when not in use to prevent children from reaching for them later.
