Working out in the pool keeps your body cooler, and the water offers natural resistance, making each movement more effective.   Here are five workouts that you can do in your oasis:

The Wave Maker

This child game of creating waves in the pool is a great workout.  Rest your forearms on the ledge, kick your legs under water for two minutes as you start floating horizontally; and then relax.  With four sets of two minutes, each will help to build your stamina and is great for your legs, core, and glutes. 

Swim Laps

The ideal way to stay in shape.  It is simple, effective, and the best cardio workout.  No matter if your pool is round or square, it is the best technique since it gives an all-around workout to your body.  Start with five laps per week and increase it up to 50 laps.  Another advantage of swimming is that it doesn’t have a lot of joint stress.

Suspended Jumping Jack

For this exercise, make sure to stand in waist-deep water.  Jumping Jacks is effective for legs and arms but without the joint stress.  Hold your arms at hip level and do a traditional jumping jack.  For a lighter work out, move only your legs and keep your arms loosely bent at your waist.

Treading Knee Tuck

This is another exercise that gives an all-around workout to your body.  While your body upright, stand in water chest deep and begin treading water by using a light kick and horizontal arm movement to keep your head above water.  Keep moves to a minimum to conserve water.  Tread water for 10 seconds, then pull the knees to your chest, grasping arms lightly around your knees. Release and continue treading water. This exercise works out your core.

Floating Kick

This exercise requires a pool noodle to keep the upper body above water.  In a kicking motion, propel yourself from one end to another.  Then, use the float to keep your legs up and only use your arms for swimming back and forth.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Pool Workout:

  1. Don’t exercise in water deeper than you can stand in, to allow you to rest if necessary.
  2. Wear water shoes to increase traction
  3. Drink plenty of water – you might not notice it, but you are still sweating

Working out in the pool is one of the best ways to stay in shape during the hot summer months. The best part is that working out in the pool can be fun – and hardly feels like working out at all!
