Can pool water kill plants and grass in your lawn?  Any lawn lover would wonder if chemicals in pool water could damage a beautifully landscaped backyard.  Don’t worry; we have a detailed guide here.

In this blog, you will learn about the effects of higher chlorine or salt concentrations on your lawn or plants and how to avoid potential damage to your landscaping.  Realistically, small splashes of pool water here and there will not affect your plants or the grass in your lawn enough to cause major problems.  Read on to learn more.

Can Pool Water Kill Your Plants or Lawn?

A higher concentration of chemicals in pool water can cause a pH imbalance in the soil once it meets.  Saltwater, on the other hand, has a different effect on lawns and plants.  Since they are smaller amounts of salt, excess salt can cause them to be unable to absorb essential minerals, nutrients, and water.

Chlorinated Pool Water

Most people should know that undiluted chlorine can harm plants or living things due to changes in soil pH (thanks to science classes in school).  On the other hand, in diluted form (or when mixed with water), chlorine is not harmful.  In a nutshell, small splashes of water on your lawn will not have any effect.

However, it is more complex than it seems.  We are talking about small splashes of water on lawn plants where the amount of chlorine (diluted) is minimal.  In other words, it cannot change the pH of the soil, so it will not be damaged.

On the other hand, if a large amount of chlorinated water splashes onto your yard, things are different.  When you drain your pool, it’s essential to ensure the chlorine level is below 0.1 parts per million (ppm).  Anything above that can lead to the death of your plants.

Undiluted chlorine can damage grass and plants on your lawn.  So be a little careful before you pour any out.  Maintaining the proper pH of your pool water is important to keep it clean and protect equipment like pumps and heaters from damage.  Therefore, the best way is to regularly change the water in a pool.  And in doing so, you may need to splash the water onto your beautiful lawn.  In this case, ensure you immediately dilute the area with fresh water to restore the pH.

If the question arises, will chlorinated water harm your lawn?  The answer is, “As long it is diluted, there is no problem whatsoever.”

Saltwater

You may like beaches and seawater, but that does not apply to your lawn.  Salt and plants are not friends and an excess of salt in the pool damages the yard’s health.

Exposing a plant to excessive amounts of salt penetrates the tiny pores in the roots, preventing the proper entry of water and nutrients.  It can cause significant damage to plants and grass over time.  We recommend briefly washing the lawn with fresh water after spraying the water from the pool to help wash away any deposited salt.

In addition to spraying the lawn with water, you can install a drainage system that directs the water outside, saving you the trouble of doing it manually.

Artificial Grass

Artificial grass has become a new trend in landscape design.  If your pool water is too salty, it would be good to use a high-quality turf impervious to salt or harmful chemicals.
