Top 5 Pool Trends for 2020

In Pool Features by Platinum Pools

It is time to look at the new trends for swimming pools and outdoor living. Like every year, we reinforce our belief that a backyard is the new living room. Trends that can be exciting and fresh and some continue to be popular. Based on our recent projects, here are the top five 2020 pool trends:

Sunken Outdoor Kitchen

The sunken outdoor kitchen has a bit of history. In 1927, Bruce Goff designed a house for his teacher, Adah Robinson. The home, built in the Art Deco style, it had a sunken conversation pit. In the 1950s and 1960s, the sunken conversation room became a trend in luxury homes and apartments. And we cannot forget that the swim-up bar became a massive hit in Las Vegas in 1950.

Combine both concepts, and you have a sunken outdoor kitchen.

The outdoor feature levels out with an in-ground pool. The grill and the sink are standards in outdoor kitchens, but now, a homeowner can add a mini-fridge, a Kamado grill, or stainless-steel cabinets. You can cook a great meal while your family or guests stay refreshed in the pool.

Acrylic Walls

Since the construction of acrylic pools in luxury hotels and condos, it is becoming the ultimate trend in residential pool building. An acrylic wall in a pool can transform a backyard into a favorite room in the house.

Some of the advantages are:

  • Acrylic gives a different and striking aesthetic. The transparent wall not only is elegant but also provides a minimalist effect.
  • The acrylic is resistant to any impact and extreme mechanical stresses.
  • It can last from ten to fifteen years.
  • In comparison, acrylic is lighter than glass but heavier than water. It is moldable, which means it can take any complex shape.
  • Acrylic walls provide a smooth surface, so dirt will not embed on the material. If the acrylic has damages, polishing will repair it quickly.
  • Acrylic is resistant to chemicals, including pool chemicals, and salt.

An acrylic wall can bring more light to a swimming pool, or it can work as an infinity edge.

Infinity Edge Pools

Infinity edge pools continue their popularity in residential pools for 2020 pool trends. It is an attractive feature that can transform a backyard into the ultimate resort-like destination. It is a regular pool apart from one thing; one or two sides do not have an end.

We can build an infinity-edge pool anywhere, but it will work best if the oasis has a natural outward view; and if the property has an incline, then it provides the perfect setting to place the oasis.

One of the biggest reasons to go for the infinity-edge pools is that it adds an elegant and stunning appearance to your backyard. It goes well with any architectural design, and its maintenance is easy.

Artificial Turf

One of the most popular items in 2020 pool trends is artificial turf. From schools and parks to offices, opting for grass that requires “less maintenance” is the trend.  The new artificial turf is more natural and softer than the synthetic green and plastic cover of many years ago.

The advantage of this new material is that it can go on any surface like soil, concrete, or tile. Yet, when it comes to land or terrain, a homeowner must request an expert to do the installation. Many factors, such as square footage and landscape condition, can take some time but ensures a perfect placing.

A soft artificial turf is great for children, but there are other textures available. It will look impeccable and realistic, hardly distinguishable from natural grass with the naked eye. Unlike natural grass, the material does not accumulate bacteria, bugs, or worms. It does not produce any health problems such as irritations or allergic reactions.

In-Floor Pool Cleaning System

With so many options available in the world of automatic pool cleaners, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. But an in-floor pool cleaning system is a real game-changer, and many homeowners prefer it too.  It is a system that uses pop-up cleaners to clear the pool of debris and dirt.

The installation happens during the construction of the pool by placing the parts all around the surface, including benches, steps, and walls.
